The What:
Mongol Rally
- The greatest motoring adventure on the planet -
Essentially, teams (or individuals) make their way from the start line in Winchester, just south of London, across Europe and Central Asia, to the finish line in Ulan-Ude, in East Siberian Russia.
The journey includes crossing 18,000 km, 21 countries, 9 time zones, 8 mountain ranges, and 3 deserts, all in one small 1000cc car.
The rally is designed to feed the desire for adventure. At the core of it, is the belief that adventure lies where the maps finish, in the unknown, where the plans fail, the roads end, and the cars break down. In the words of the rally founders, The Adventurists "Knowing where you’re going is boring. The Mongol Rally follows our ‘unroute’ ethos; you go where you please. Adventure doesn’t happen following a nob with a flag, It happens when you’re lost."
There are three rules for completing the rally:
Rule 1. You can only take a farcically small vehicle of 1 litre or less
- You need to drive a small, shit car to make the rally tougher. It's no fun if it's too easy. With a small car or bike, you're more likely to break down so you're more likely to interact with the locals, more likely to get stuck and more likely to have an adventure.
Rule 2. You’re completely on your own
- We could tell you everything you need to know about all the countries, roads and borders between here and Russia to ensure you have a safe, uncomplicated journey. But if it's not dangerous and you aren't lost, you're not on an adventure. That means no backup or support. If you get stuck or in trouble, you need to solve the problem yourself.
Rule 3. You've got to raise £1000 for charity
- It only seems fair that if you’re having the mother of all adventures you should give a little back, so we ask teams on the Rally to raise a minimum of £1000 for charity. £500 of this goes to our official charity Cool Earth. The other £500 can be donated to a charity of your choice.
Check out this video by the rally organisers, The Adventurists, back in 2011 to promote the trip. It'll give you a fair idea of what we're getting ourselves into.

The Why:
Asside for the obvious adventure factor detailed above, we're also taking part in this crazy adventure to help raise awareness, and more importantly funds for, two amazing chaities.
charity: water
charity: water is a non-profit organization bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries. 663 million people live without clean water, which is almost 1 in 10 people worldwide.
Many of us have no idea what it's like to be thirsty. We have plenty of water to drink -- even the water in our toilets is clean! Many people around the world don’t have this luxury. Every day, about 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. It doesn’t have to be this way. There are simple solutions like drilled wells, spring protections and BioSand filters that help provide clean water to communities around the world.
The money raised here will help charity: water build these types of projects around the world, and we need your help to help fund as many of these projects as possible.
Please donate to our campaign -- anything you can give is a huge help.
If you can give up one cup of coffee, one afternoon treat, a takaway meal you don't need, that extra beer after work, or have a night in rather than paying for the movies - and donate that money here, where it can change (or even save) someone's entire life!
100% of the money will be used to build clean water projects, and when they’re complete, charity: water will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the exact community we helped, and share these with you also.
It costs only $45 to bring clean water to one more person.
Please help us help as many people as possible to get the basics of life most of us are lucky enough to take for granted.
* Please note, donations made directly to charity: website through the button below, and the amount shown as raised on their site, are in USD$
Cool Earth
Cool earth is the rally's official charity who work alongside local communities to halt deforestation and its impact on climate change.
Rainforest is our global safety net. Supporting local people to protect it is the smartest, most positive climate action there is.
Tropical forests have the highest carbon density of all forest types due to their ability for vast carbon sequestration. In the Amazon rainforest alone, a single square mile of rainforest often houses more than 50,000 insect species. Tropical forests have the highest carbon density of all forest types due to their ability for vast carbon sequestration. Therefore, protecting rainforest is one of the most effective actions we can take to tackle climate breakdown.
Deforestation releases as much carbon into the atmosphere as the global transport sector and destroys the best carbon capture and storage technology we have. The reality of climate change is no longer up for debate. It is real and it is happening now.
Please donate to help halt deforestation and its impact on climate change
Our changing climate is the most pressing challenge facing our world today. Forest loss plays a major part in this, contributing to more than 12% of all CO2 emissions. Keeping rainforest standing is the simplest and cheapest way to mitigate climate change.
We all rely on rainforest, no matter where we may be. Balancing the climate, protecting wildlife and supporting society; its importance cannot be understated.
